Here at Broma Foods, we talk a lot about the many benefits that come with enjoying our plant-based drinking chocolate. From its 2-star Great Taste Award to the fact that it is only 36kcal a portion. However, beyond the great taste, there is another great benefit that comes when you purchase a pouch of original, orange chocolate, or salted caramel chocolate sauce, and that is that it contains none of the 14 major food allergens that can be found in food and drink.
We're proud that our delicious chocolate sauce can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of dietary preferences or requirements. So, in today's blog, we thought we'd get our lab coats on and dig a little deeper to look at what the 14 major allergens are, what you should look out for when looking at allergenic ingredients lists on food products and food labels, the kind of allergic reactions that can occur, and why our plant-based drinking chocolate is perfect for adults and children!

The 14 Key Allergens To Look Out For
There are plenty of foods that contain allergens, which, for the most part, won't have a big impact on people. However, for those who suffer from a food allergy, the effects can range from irritable, to life-threatening, and can cause severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing and even anaphylactic shock.
That's why, here at Broma, we've worked hard to make our products as inclusive as possible so as well as being vegan, they're also allergen-free.
List of allergens found in foods:
- Celery, including celery salt, celery plants and celery stalks.
- Cereals that contain gluten (barley and oats are the key things to look out for there).
- Prawns, crabs and lobsters, otherwise known as crustaceans.
- Lupin flour, or lupin seeds, can be found in types of bread and other foods such as pastries, and occasionally pasta.
- Mussels and oysters, collectively known as molluscs.
- Sesame seeds, which you might find on burger buns.
- Sulphur dioxide and sulphites, but only if they are at a concentration of more than 10 parts per million.
- Tree nuts such as pistachio nuts, pecan nuts, macadamia nuts, cashew nuts, hazelnuts. Tree nuts can be found in products too, such as peanut flour, nut powders, nut oils (such as sesame oil), and nut butter.
It's important to remember that this list applies to additives, processing aids and other substances that can be found in the final product.
Thankfully, food businesses, such as Broma, are required by law to tell consumers this allergen information and if any of their products contain any of the aforementioned common ingredients, whether it is pre-packed or loose food, they must also state whether any cross-contamination could have happened in the production process.
You can find any one of these ingredients by looking at the ingredients labels on prepacked food. This will prevent you from suffering something nasty, such as anaphylactic shock, if you know you have an egg allergy, fish allergy, celery allergy, or any other type of food allergy found in adults or children.
