What Is Cocoa Anyway?
Before we go over the positive effects of cocoa, let's first lay out what it actually is.
Cocoa is a highly concentrated powder that is in fact made from chocolate liquor. This is prepared using cocoa beans, which is the fruit of the cacao tree. The seeds from the cacao tree (also called the Theobroma tree) are removed and allowed to dry in the sun, once the soft white pulp has been removed.
There is a common misconception that cacao and cocoa are the same things. Now, while they are similar in look, spelling, origin, they are different and offer slightly different benefits and effects. Cocoa products are made by crushing cocoa beans and removing the fat or cocoa butter. They are then roasted which helps to reduce the bitterness and bring out the natural sweetness that we all know and love. Cacao products are made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans.
Fun fact: cocoa beans and nibs were once used as currency in the aforementioned Mayan era because their health benefits were seen as so valuable.
The Health Benefits Of Cocoa
Potential to improve nitric oxide levels which may reduce high blood pressure
The flavanols in cocoa have been shown to improve nitric oxide levels in a person's blood. Having good nitric oxide levels can improve the way your blood vessels work which, in turn, will reduce your blood pressure. It's important to note that this potential benefit may be weakened slightly because of the way cocoa is processed.
May lower your risk of a heart attack
As well as reducing blood pressure, well-dilated arteries can reduce the risk of a heart attack by allowing the blood to flow more freely. Bad cholesterol may also be combated by the high flavanol content which acts as a blood thinner, an effect found in aspirin.
Blood flow improves brain and brain function
Polyphenols can potentially have the effect of reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases (those that impact brain health) because they can improve both blood flow, as mentioned, and brain function. They can improve the biochemical pathways that produce neurons and other important molecules that are essential for healthy blood flow and optimum neuro performance.
Its anti-diabetic effects may have positive effects on symptoms
Healthy chocolate can have some anti-diabetic effects. Studies have shown that they can slow down carbohydrate digestion and absorption in the gut. This has the knock-on effect of improving insulation secretion which helps sugar get into the muscles - potentially lowering the risk of diabetes. It's important to note that overconsumption of chocolate is not good for blood sugar control and should be done in moderation.
